Water Is a Right: Join the Fight for Water For Everybody!

Water is a basic human need—and access to clean, safe water should never be out of reach for anyone. The "Water For Everybody" Campaign Collaboration between We the People of Detroit (WPD) and Detroit vs. Everybody is raising awareness and driving action to ensure water justice for all.

Together, we can make water accessible for everyone.

WATER AFFORDABILITY PLATFORM

Take the Pledge

By endorsing this pledge, you commit to the principles and actions outlined in the Water Affordability Platform. Your support helps ensure clean, safe, and affordable water for all, amplifying our collective call for justice.

This platform is drawn from the Eleven-Points by the Michigan Water Unity Table (November 14, 2018).

01

Water is a public good and should never be privatized.

Water must be treated as a public trust, with provision as a public good—not as a commodity subject to privatization.

02

Water affordability is one piece of the puzzle.

Ensuring affordability is part of a broader commitment to universal access to clean, safe, and affordable water.

03

Water bills should be on a sliding scale.

A sliding-scale, income-based rate system must be adopted to address water affordability.

04

Water is a public health issue.

Policies must prioritize public health, preserving and maintaining it through affordable water access.

05

Water affordability builds climate resilience.

Conservation principles must guide affordability policies, with assistance provided to low-income residents to support sustainable water use.

06

Water is a human right.

Water affordability policies must uphold quality customer service and the human dignity of all residents.

07

Water shutoffs are not a solution.

Water shutoffs contradict public health priorities and human dignity and must be eliminated as a policy.

08

Water assistance and affordability are not the same.

Assistance plans are not affordability plans and should not be misrepresented as such. Tiered pricing plans must also not be conflated with affordability plans.

09

Promote equitable community justice through water affordability.

Economic opportunities—jobs, training, and contracts—should prioritize the most impacted communities, aligning with the Justice40 framework.
